Prof. Nihal Thomas

Senior Prof. Nihal Thomas is the Principal coordinator for the ICMR Collaborating Centre of Excellence for Diabetes. He has previously served as Vice Principal (Research) & Associate Director and Deputy Medical Superintendent, HOU- Unit-1 and HOD, at CMC, Vellore.

He has more than 380 PubMed indexed publications, 45+ chapters, and three books: one in the 9th edition and another in the 2nd edition. His Google Citation index exceeds 56,000+, with an i-10 index of 190+ and an h-index of 60+. His areas of interest include the pathogenesis of diabetes in India and general endocrinology.

Prof. Nihal Thomas has delivered over 25 orations, including the MS Ahuja, Subash Mukherjee, South Asian Federation of Endocrinology, East African Diabetes Society, and US Congress. He has initiated projects to train medical and paramedical staff from 200 rural hospitals for diabetes, notably the first comprehensive Diabetes Nurse Educator Programme in India and the molecular laboratory; he has spearheaded indirect calorimetry, hyperinsulinemic clamp studies, body composition, and NMR spectroscopy.

Prof. Nihal Thomas has completed more than 70 multinational/in-house clinical trials and has generated about 9 million dollars in research grants.

He is the recipient of several accolades, including the Tamil Nadu Medical Council Award for medical excellence (2022), Dr. MGR University Medical University Annual Research Day Faculty Award (2024), Indian Council of Medical Research Centre of Excellence Award for Diabetes (2024), Lourd-Yedanapalli Award for Outstanding Researcher (2009), Best Undergraduate Teacher Award (2023), and the Royal College of Physicians Award for Excellence in Teaching and Training (2017).

Under his leadership, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at CMC Vellore was recognized by the BMJ as the Diabetology Team of the Year (2015).
