Prof. Nikhil Tandon

Prof. Nikhil Tandon is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and has worked as a clinician-researcher specializing in cardio-metabolic disease.

Prof. Tandon has been involved in the conduct of large-scale epidemiology studies in children and adults evaluating the prevalence of cardio-metabolic risk factors and their associations, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. He is one of the founding investigators of the CARRS Cohort, a population-based cohort evaluating cardiometabolic risk factors and disease in more than 16,000 adults in two Indian metropolitan cities (Delhi, Chennai), with a follow-up of nearly 15 years.

His team has been involved in the innovative use of technology and quality improvement strategies, such as the use of a care coordinator, decision support software, clinic flow modifications, opportunistic screening, and task sharing, to facilitate care delivery for people with diabetes and hypertension. This body of work has led to the inclusion of their model of care (task sharing and technology) for ambulatory management of diabetes in the Government of India National Programme for NCD.

Prof. Nikhil Tandon’s group has also been working in the area of diabetes prevention in women with a prior history of gestational diabetes, and have implemented the largest global study in this population.

Prof. Nikhil Tandon has served on several WHO Expert Groups and currently serves as the Chair of the Technical Advisory Group on Diabetes. At the national level, he chairs the Technical Advisory Group of the ICMR Young Diabetes Registry and is a Member of the Technical Advisory Group for the National Programme for NCDs.

Prof. Nikhil Tandon has been conferred the Fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), the Indian Academy of Sciences (FASc), the National Academy of Sciences India (FNASc), and the Indian National Science Academy (FNA). He has been bestowed with the Dr. BC Roy Award for Eminent Medical Teacher and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour.
