About Faculty
Dr. Mahendra Sonawane
Mahendra Sonawane received his graduate training in developmental biology under the guidance of Prof. Sohan Modak at the University of Pune. He then moved to the laboratory of Prof. Christiane Nuesslein-Volhard at the Max-Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tubingen, Germany, as a postdoctoral researcher where he started investigating genetic regulation of epithelial development using zebrafish epidermis as a model organism.
He joined TIFR in 2009 and established a research program to unravel genes and mechanisms underlying the regulation of tissue polarity, cell size, and epithelial cell projections in the developing zebrafish epidermis and intestine. He has established zebrafish as a model for microvillus inclusion disease and has recently started investigating the effect of nutrient composition on gut development.
Dr. Sonawane is a recipient of the Ramanujan Fellowship, Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance Senior Fellowship, and was the Head of the Max-Planck Partner Group at TIFR.
