Prof. Sarah Mathai

After completing her pediatric post-graduate training, Prof. Sarah Mathai joined the Pediatrics Unit 1 of the Department of Pediatrics at CMC Vellore in 2003. She has been working in the Pediatric Endocrine division of the unit since then.

Prof. Sarah Mathai completed her 3-year Clinical Fellowship and PhD at The Liggins Institute, University of Auckland, New Zealand (2006-2009). Her PhD thesis focused on the impact of preterm birth in two generations. The adults in this study were the offspring of the original Auckland steroid trial in the 1980s for threatened preterm labor.

Prof. Sarah Mathai’s study involved the parents and their children, assessing β-cell function using a hyperglycemic clamp model, insulin sensitivity using a modified IVGTT, body composition, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. In recent years, she has guided MD Pediatrics post-graduate trainees in three different studies evaluating the growth trajectory of children born SGA & LGA compared to those born AGA.

Prof. Sarah Mathai had the remarkable privilege of being the ISPAE nominee for formulating the International Consensus Guidelines on Small for Gestational Age management from infancy to young adulthood. Her special areas of interest include growth, bone disorders, and endocrinopathies in tumor survivors.
