He is a Professor of Endocrinology & Metabolism at the Department of Medicine at the University of the West Indies and an Honorary Consultant at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Prof. Boyne has extensively studied the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in tropical settings. For his meticulous and innovative research work, he received the Principal’s Award for Best Research Publication for two consecutive years (2010-2011). His research focuses on a life course model examining the role of early life origins of type 2 diabetes and their underlying metabolic mechanisms.

More recently, using the clinical model of adult survivors of severe acute malnutrition (Marasmus and Kwashiorkor), Prof. Boyne has been studying the role of acquired beta-cell dysfunction.

He is a member of several medical and research associations, including the Endocrine Society, DOHAD (Developmental Origins of Health and Disease), the Association of Consultant Physicians of Jamaica, and the Caribbean Endocrine Association.
