Professor Meredith Hawkins
Prof. Meredith Hawkins holds the Harold and Muriel Block Chair in Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she founded and directs the Global Diabetes Institute (GDI). The institute has established many research collaborations in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) to study forms of diabetes endemic to these regions.
Prof. Hawkins has received numerous prestigious honors and awards, including the Outstanding Investigator Award from the American Federation of Medical Research and election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. She also served on the Congressionally appointed National Clinical Care Commission.
Her research focuses on the effects of nutrient deficiency and excess on the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and on central regulation of glucose metabolism. This includes extensive phenotyping of an atypical form of diabetes found in low BMI individuals.
