Professor William Cefalu
Dr. William Cefalu is the director of the NIH’s Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases. From 2017 to 2019, he served as the Chief Scientific, Medical, and Mission Officer at the American Diabetes Association.
Over his nearly 35-year career as a physician, scientist, and healthcare expert, Dr. Cefalu has been a prominent leader in the endocrine and diabetes scientific and medical communities. He had research support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than 25 years and served as the principal investigator for two NIH research centers.
His clinical and basic science research focuses on improving the metabolic state of individuals with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, as well as on the cellular mechanisms for insulin resistance. He also played a significant role in scholarly publications, serving as the Associate Editor for *Diabetes Care* and *Diabetes* journals from 2003 to 2011, and as the editor-in-chief of *Diabetes Care* from 2011-2017, where he helped the journal achieve its highest impact factor.
His research interests include diabetes heterogeneity, insulin access, and cardiovascular risk associated with diabetes.
